LibertyBus announces year one bus fares freeze

CT Plus, operator of Jersey’s new bus service, LibertyBus, confirmed today that the price of bus fares and bus passes will be frozen for 2013. When the new service starts on January 2, Islanders can expect a better service - with the same tickets available at the same prices.

The current maximum fare will stay at £1.70, with the prices of shorter journeys frozen at £1.20. Passes and season tickets will remain good value, with five day, six day and monthly commuter passes staying at their 2012 prices of £13.60, £16.30 and £50.40 respectively for zone B. The child fare of 70p also remains unchanged.

When the new smartcard system is introduced in the run up to the summer, Islanders can continue to access the 2012 prices by making the switch to smartcards. The new smartcard is being introduced to ensure ease of payment and faster boarding times – which means less hassle and quicker bus journeys.

“We want to give Islanders a real incentive to make the switch to smartcards” said Kevin Hart, General Manager of LibertyBus. “Keeping fares frozen for the whole of 2013 for people who use the cards will help all Islanders to change over. There will be a smartcard deal that’s right for everyone, available well in advance of any change to cash fares and we’ll make sure the cards are widely publicised and easy to obtain.”

When the cards are introduced, passengers will be able to choose between a smartcard with a set number of journeys loaded on, a bus pass for a particular time period or a combination of the two. They will then be able to top up their cards when they run out.
