In the light of recent industrial unrest, Dai Powell explores an idea to move labour relations on from confrontation to true partnership
First of all, the fact that the people of Jersey will not be subject to unnecessary strike action over the coming days is extremely welcome. This has to be good news for the public and for tourism in Jersey.
LibertyBus has welcomed the decision of Unite to call off the threatened five days of industrial action that would otherwise have seriously disrupted the lives of people in Jersey.
Why are the Union striking? A question I posed last week. Well, as far as we have been told and the public in Jersey led to believe, they are striking to force us to take back an employee that we sacked after having an accident that injured a passenger. We think we were right and fair, the Union think otherwise.
Unite the Union have announced a plan for 5 days of industrial action. Unite are demanding the reinstatement of a driver convicted of driving without due care and attention, and injuring a passenger. Strike dates are 22 & 23 August and 27, 28 and 29 August.
The reaction to the notification of strike action by the union has not come as a great surprise, although as I recently wrote, I do not want all our drivers tarred with the same brush as the contempt shown to the people of Jersey by the Union.
As everyone knows there is a dispute between Unite and LibertyBus. Sadly, this did not come as much of a surprise to us as we were told before we took over the contract that this would happen and, as predicted, the Union have been trying very hard to make sure it does.

Due to a fallen tree and wall at Le Rocquier, please expect possible delays on the route 1A and 23. One lane has now been cleared and is open to inbound and outbound traffic, but traffic is moving slowly.
